If you have experienced a fire at your place of business or in your home, many decisions exist after the fire has been extinguished. At SERVPRO we are happy to assist you and attempt to make some of these decisions easier with the services that we provide.
Step 1: Emergency Contact
The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.
Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment
We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.
Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service
Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.
Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)
The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.
Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces
We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.
Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing
We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.
Step 7: Restoration
Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.
One of the most damaging and devastating things you can ever experience as a homeowner is a flood.
There are many causes of household flooding that can include:
Heavy rains
Sewer back-up
Malfunctioning sump-pump
Pipe burst
No matter what the cause, you should know what you should do if your house floods. Taking care of the problem earlier will help you to reduce the amount of damage and can make the clean-up and repair easier. It's best to call a professional when dealing with water damage in your home. The certified technicians at SERVPRO® of South Louisville know exactly what steps to follow in order to prevent further damage, and to get your home cleaned up and dried out so you can get back to normal.
The first several days after a disaster are critical to preventing unnecessary secondary damages like mold. SERVPRO suggests the following steps to help minimize additional damage to your home, business and possessions.
If the water has entered the structure through the flooding of a creek, stream or river, or if it has filtered through insulation during its intrusion, it is considered black water and could be hazardous to your health. Avoid contact with contaminated items as much as possible.
Take the greatest caution while entering your home, and wear sturdy shoes and protective clothing when dealing with flooded areas.
Do not attempt to operate any electrical equipment while standing in wet or damp locations.
Throw away all foods - even canned goods - that have encountered flood waters.
Remove and prop wet upholstery and pillow cushions for drying. Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
Place fans at 45-degree angles to walls and move large furniture away from walls to create the best air circulation.
If your home has a crawlspace, be aware excess moisture in this area can often foster mold growth.
SERVPRO also recommends having a three-day supply of water for each member of your family - including pets - along with non-perishable food, a battery-powered radio, extra batteries and a flashlight. Citizens should also keep in mind things like necessary medications and insurance documents.
In any Hurricane situation, one of the greatest dangers that face residents is not only wind and rain. Many times rising floodwaters cause the much of the damage and heartache. Although rainfall plays a role in this, so does the storms surge that pushes water not only onshore but up rivers and tributaries, causing floodwater to reach miles inland. These waters not only damage structures as rushing water causes foundations to erode and break loose from the ground to which they are anchored, but also carry with them deadly bacteria and disease. In many cases what is left behind after the water subsides, can cause great problems of its own. The trained professionals at SERVPRO have been specially trained for these scenario's. Let us be there for you in your time of need.
Earlier this week Louisville got its first frost and snow of the year. With the pretty snow comes a lot of unexpected problems. SERVPRO of South Louisville received several calls about branches falling through roofs due to the weight of the ice that fell overnight. SERVPRO went out to the homes and put tarps on the effected rooftops to prevent anymore interior damage from being done. We also set up air movers to dry out any areas with water damage such as hardwood flooring to prevent it from buckling, and then started the steps necessary to repair the roofs. The best way to prevent this from happening is to make sure all of the trees around your home are well maintained and trimmed so that there are no branches hanging over your home.
Today SERVPRO of South Louisville received a called about a sump pump failure in a customers home. Sump pumps don't last forever, aside from electrical interruptions the sump pump has a life expectancy of only 10 years.
We arrived on site and most of the water had already dried up but the customer was very aware of the risk of mold after standing water has been in your home even if it was a short period of time. After the water was extracted SERVPRO placed several dehumidifiers and air movers in the basement to pull all of the moisture out of the air to prevent any possibility of mold becoming a problem for the customer. Sump pump failures are more common than people think, SERVPRO suggests people perform regular maintenance by regularly pouring a bucket of water in it to make sure it start immediately, making sure the vent hole is clear with no blockages, and making sure all pipes are tightly connected. Another option to make sure the battery isn't a concern is "deep cycle batteries" they are made to use a steady amount of energy over a long period of time so they are less likely to fail as quickly.
When you are dealing with water damage, immediate action is crucial. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals respond immediately and use advanced equipment and techniques to remove the water quickly. They closely monitor and document the drying process to verify your property is dried properly and thoroughly.

Lightning is one of the most dangerous parts of a storm, and it is not something we usually think much about. There are so many things that could happen when lightning strikes, and when it strikes your property you could be looking at damage not only to the structure but to the contents of it as well.
The following are things you need to prepare for in the case of a horrible storm:
Fire danger
Wood and other flammable building materials can easily be ignited anywhere an exposed lightning channel comes in contact with them. It is most common in the attic or on the roof of a house and is easily conducted by wiring or pipes. When the current passes through wires, it will commonly burn them up. This presents a fire ignition hazard in and around the wiring.
Power surge damage
If any of the home's electrical wiring is struck, the explosive surge can damage even non-electronic appliances that are connected. Even the home's electrical system could experience a surge that could cause potentially significant damage to anything connected to it.
The important thing to remember is that if you find yourself dealing with lightning damage, you can count on SERVPRO of South Louisville for the cleaning and restoration of your property. We’ll use our years of experience to make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Trust In SERVPRO For A Certified Clean In Your Business!
In the restoration industry it's important to treat each and every customer with the upmost care because you never know what jobs could come up down the road for that building.
During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic SERVPRO of South Louisville did many Covid-19 cleanings for local businesses if they had an exposure or positive case. Some commercial properties just wanted to do a better job keeping their facilities clean to ease the mind of their employees.
One of the local businesses we serviced for a Covid-19 cleaning ended up having an electrical fire at their location in May of 2021. They immediately knew who to call because of the service we provided during their cleaning in 2020.
SERVPRO of South Louisville has the manpower, equipment and chemicals to handle any fire in your home or business.
We've taken many calls over the years from homeowners who were able to get the grease fire under control but the smoke damage was already noticeable throughout the kitchen and adjoining rooms. Our crews can find the smoke damage and mitigate it from all surfaces and fabrics.
Each year the National Fire Protection Association produces a National Survey to record data and statistics on reported fires throughout the United States. According to the 2005 survey data, 130,000 non-residential fires were reported last year resulting in approximately $2.5 billion in property damages and loss.
Commercial fires are a growing concern not only to employers and employees, but also to property managers and the insurance industry. Commercial fires generally result in a higher monetary loss amount than a typical house fire. According to reports entitled, "Topical Fire Research Series, Volume 3-Issue 10", non-residential structures are often more expensive because the buildings are generally larger than residential structures and the contents of the structure are of higher value. Commercial fires may affect a facility with a lot of square footage, equipment, products and technology, not to mention important data. contracts and customer records.
SERVPRO Is Unique When It Comes To Working Together!
One of things that make SERVPRO of South Louisville so unique is how we work with our agents and customers to identify whether a claim should be filed.
SERVPRO has learned that insurance companies do not look favorable on zero paid claims. The insurance companies have found that people who turn in small claims are in effect using their policies as a home maintenance program.
We tell our agents to call us so we can put eyes on the situation. We can tell within a few minutes whether the claim will meet or exceed the customers deductible. This in turn helps the customer avoid higher rates, and the agent avoids a loss that in the long run could affect retention.
SERVPRO was recently asked by an agent to look at a customer‘s basement that had a sump pump malfunction. After reviewing the loss, the damage would not have met the insureds $2500 deductible. This insured avoided a claim and had SERVPRO of South Louisville do the water mitigation. Both parties were happy and we have a very satisfied agent and customer.
Sprinkler Water Damage to Downtown Louisville Skyscraper
SERVPRO of South Louisville was recently called out to a skyscraper building downtown that had their sprinkler system burst on the twenty-fourth floor, the damage from the water affected all the way down to the twentieth floor. For SERVPRO of South Louisville this was an "all hands on deck" job. All of the production staff, the marketing team, and several office staff were at the building helping to perform the remediation work.
There were large amounts of standing water on the affected floors that needed to be extracted. Our team of certified technicians removed all of the damaged ceiling tiles, extracted the water, and removed any other damaged items in the office areas.
The next step was to set up air movers and dehumidifiers to begin the dry out process. The equipment was set to get all of the moisture out of the affected areas, the air movers keep the moisture in the air moving around to get closer to the dehumidifier so it can be removed from the air.
Emergencies like this happen on a regular basis, SERVPRO of South Louisville has the experience and the team needed to take care of the problem and make your residence or commercial building is back to normal, "Like it never even happened."

As winter goes on and we go back and forth with temperatures from the 40's to below freezing, the ground will go back and forth from freezing to thawing during those fluctuating temperatures. As this happens during the winter months and into the spring, this will cause the ground around the exterior of buildings and houses to pool water.
When we have rain or snow melting this can cause leaks around the foundation of your home or business. You should do checks on the exterior and interior of buildings and houses to make sure there is no water coming in and causing water damage.
Once the areas are checked you should go back and add soil and/or sod to those areas to fix the pooling of water and fix drainage to take water away from the foundation. On the interior if cracks or leaking occurs you should take measures to fix any of those areas where water is coming in. Once the cracks have been fixed any water damage should be mitigated properly to decrease your chances of any secondary issues such as mold.
Taking these steps will help keep your building or home dry on the inside and keep water from pooling around the perimeter.
We are a localized restoration service that gets the job done quickly and efficiently. Call SERVPRO of South Louisville to book a service.

Why SERVPRO? We can help you to not become a space heater statistic
SERVPRO of South Louisville has been dealing with an abundance of fire jobs during the past couple of months. A majority of the fires we have been responding to have most likely started from space heater malfunctions. There are some things you can do to help with the prevention of a space heater starting a house fire.
Before using any space heater make sure that you inspect the heater for cracked plugs or loose connections.
Make sure you NEVER leave a space heater on unattended, turn it off before leaving a room or going to bed and do not let animals or children near the space heater unattended.
Keep everything that is flammable at least three feet away from the space heater (Curtains, furniture, clothing, and etc.).
Plug in the space heater directly into the wall, do not plug into an extension cord or surge protector. Plugging it into these devices could cause the surge protector to overheat resulting in a fire.
Space heaters are one of the biggest starters of house fires, if you use these tips they can reduce the likeliness that SERVPRO of South Louisville will be doing fire remediation work at your home.
If you are ever in a situation where you have a big loss in your home whether its with fire, water, or mold, just remember that SERVPRO of South Louis

We want to make the whole process as easy and seamless as possible for the customer.
When It Comes To Fire, SERVPRO Always Tries To “Restore” First
In South Louisville homes, fire damage restoration potential to carpeting and area rugs depends on the extent of heat damage, which can result in charring, or in some cases the melting of synthetic fibers. Our certified professionals can perform tests to see if the different dyes, coatings, and materials used and select the most effective restorative applications. Floor coverings usually avoid the worst of the heat damage from a fire, they are usually soiled or scarred by falling hot debris and soot that can collect in the fibers.
Sometimes water damage happens from the firefighting efforts. We at SERVPRO understand the need for rapid water extraction to mitigate secondary damages. Testing is also an important step in the cleaning process, to reveal the best method to restore carpets and fine rugs.
Steam cleaning, when proven by testing, is often the best method. SERVPRO technicians use their state-of-the-art equipment, SERVPRO Professional Cleaning Products, and training to remove as much of the soils, stains, and odors as possible.
SERVPRO of South Louisville serves the community by providing fire damage restoration services. Don't hesitate to contact us to make it "Like it never even happened." 502-452-1298
Did you know that SERVPRO of South Louisville has an Esporta Washing System?
Did you know that SERVPRO of South Louisville has an Esporta Washing System?
What does this mean for you? If you, or someone you know, suffers a fire loss at your home or office you can rest assured that SERVPRO of South Louisville has what it takes to restore even the most smoke damaged items back to like new condition. Some items are just irreplaceable.
Below is part of an article directly from Esporta regarding myths about content cleaning.
Myth #1: Homeowners would rather buy new contents than restore “old” contents.
While homeowners are happy to shop and add new items to what they already own, they don’t necessarily want to replace everything because that takes a lot of time and effort. Imagine the task of replacing all of the furniture, clothing, dishes, decorations; literally every item in your home. Just thinking about it is exhausting. In fact, studies show that customer service plummets when homeowners are inconvenienced.
Soft contents tend to hold more sentimental value than any other content category because they are often seasonal, purchased for a special occasion, gifted or hold a special meaning. A homeowner may have an outfit worn to a daughter’s wedding or other memorable event, a flag symbolizing military service, or a quilt that grandma hand-stitched. These sentimental items are often irreplaceable.

Have Storm or Flood Damage? Call Us Today (502) 452-1298
The official hurricane season for the Atlantic Basin (the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico) is from 1 June to 30 November. The most volatile time for hurricanes is from mid-August to late October. However, deadly hurricanes can occur anytime in the hurricane season.
During this season SERVPRO of South Louisville monitors storms as they develop usually near the coast of Africa. We stay vigilant this time of year because SERVPRO of South Louisville is part of a National Storm Response Team that can be activated anytime and anywhere in the United States. When natural disasters happen and the damage is widespread, its hard for local SERVPRO teams to handle massive volumes of calls. When these offices can't handle the influx of calls offices like SERVPRO of South Louisville can be called upon to help assist in these areas.
We are proactive during this time of year making sure that our storm trailers are stocked with the proper equipment, materials, and chemicals to combat any disaster. Our Project Managers, Crew Chiefs, and the rest of our Production Team have a specific protocol that we follow when activated.
This allows us to be as efficient as possible on each job. Sometimes crews are gone for a couple weeks and in extreme cases they can be gone for months at a time. SERVPRO of South Louisville is always here locally when disaster happens, but we are ready to assist anywhere in the United States at a moment's notice.
Flooding happens; Are You Ready? (Spoiler Alert: We are!)
Floods Rank As One Of The Most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is a potential for suffering flood damage.
If a flood happens in your home or business, there are some very important rules you should follow!
-Stay away from flood waters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off your feet.
-If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
-Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water. Keep your pets out of the water too.
If a flood does strike your home or business, contact SERVPRO! Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. We are faster to any disaster, here to help, and ready to use our equipment, expertise, and experience to get you back to “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO of South Louisville received a call in the early morning hours from a customer in downtown Louisville with a large water loss. The original cause of the loss was due to a small fire in a server room which in turn set off the sprinkler system. By the time the fire was contained, and the sprinklers shut off, water had made it was down from the source area to several floors below affecting 3 floors in total.
SERVPRO of South Louisville was able to mitigate and prevent more water damage by arriving on site within the hour with extractors, dehumidifiers and air movers. Each team member knew what to do and was able to contain and remove the water from the affected floors. SERVPRO proved that teamwork overcomes even the biggest challenges as marketing and management teams all pitched in to aid the customer “Like it never even happened.”
SERVPRO of South Louisville was ready to respond when a local nonprofit experienced a small fire in their physical therapy room at their convalescence center. This part of the building provides care for children who are in need of short-term, long-term, and respite care. Understanding the need of urgency to get the job started as quickly as possible, SERVPRO responded to the medical facility within the hour. The fire was caused by a fluorescent light bulb that short circuited in the ballast. Luckily, one of the medical staff members was able to grab a fire extinguisher and put out the fire. Unfortunately, the room was filled with soot and carcinogens from the extinguisher. Knowing that most of the children at the facility have breathing difficulties, time was of the essence to get the room cleaned and sanitized. A crew of 10 utilized Chem-Sponges, HEPA vacuums, SERVPRO oxide and much to clean and sanitize the area. The team cleaned all medical equipment and touch points on site and then utilized our Esporta machine offsite to clean all soft content items from the facility. We placed two Air Scrubbers with charcoal filters and one Hydroxyl Generator on site for 5 days to assist with the odors and pathogens. Once the job was complete the facility was able to reopen and resume much needed physical therapy for the children in need. At SERVPRO we pride ourselves in the work we are able to provide and the people we are able to help. "Like it never even happened."
On February 22nd 2021 SERVPRO of South Louisville went to Longview, Texas to help out with the frozen pipes that had busted from the winter storm. The houses that we would demo SERVPRO would take out any of the flooring that was affected, and any of the walls that were wet. It was a great experience to go to Texas and help out the people that needed it following the devastating winter storm. Being part of the Storm Team is a great way to be able to travel the U.S. and help out the people that are in need. During this trip our technicians met the General Manager of the SERVPRO in Longview for lunch one day and he was telling me that the SERVPRO of Oregon sent down 53 semi trailers full of Fans and Dehumidifiers. That equipment was a big help considering the amount of damage the winter storm caused in Texas. We are all in this together and Here to Help!
Knowing what type of water damage you have is important
Understanding the type of water loss you are dealing with is important to how you mitigate. If you find water in your home and it’s coming from an either an inside or outside source it is essential you know wether it’s a category 1,2 or 3 water loss.
Examples of a Category 1 loss can include: broken water supply lines, melting ice or snow, falling rainwater.
Category 2 can include: discharge from washing machines and dishwashers, punctured waterbeds, and/or broken aquariums. All of the above have potential to cause sickness if consumed.
Category 3 can include: sewer water, sea water and rising water from rivers due to flooding. All of these can be extremely contaminated and can cause severe reactions.
Knowing how what type of water category you are dealing is vital! That’s why the experts at SERVPRO of South Louisville are on hand. We can diagnose and take the proper safety precautions and steps to mitigate any category of water.
When you call SERVPRO of South Louisville know that the person on the other end of the line will do everything possible to help alleviate your stress and make it "Like it never even happened."
Our marketing manager, Randy Barnett, received a call on his cell phone from a State Farm agent about a fire at the agent's neighbor's house. Randy left right away and was onsite quickly. He was able to give the family one of our emergency fire packs that we keep on hand for this very situation. The fire pack contains personal toiletry items, children items if needed such as a lovie and child toothbrushes and toothpaste, bottled water, and much more to help the homeowner when they go to a hotel or another home that night.
Once the fire department cleared the scene and allowed them in the home, SERVPRO helped the family bag up clothing and personal items that they would like cleaned right away so they could have things to wear and use the very next day.
Randy went above and beyond staying in touch with the family throughout the cleanup and reconstruction process. Before the family was able to move back into the home the father passed away from Covid-19. On the day the family was able to move back in the home our construction manager hand delivered a flower arrangement to help the wife have a little bit of joy during her sadness.
At SERVPRO of South Louisville we care about the entire person and not just the job at hand. We are HERE to HELP if you find yourself in need of our disaster services.
Roof leaks can happen day or night. And they can happen even if it's not raining outside. That's what occurred for a customer last week following the ice storm in Louisville, Kentucky. An ice dam built up inside the roof following a lot of freezing rain, polar vortex temperatures and snow in the area. Once the ice began to melt the customer noticed a drip in their master bathroom. The drywall and light had to be removed, and our technician had to go on the roof to assess the damage. Once the cause was taken care of the drying process began.
A dehumidifier and air mover were set, the area was monitored daily, and now the room is dried out and ready for reconstruction crews to fix the drywall and replace the light/vent fan fixture.
The customer was thrilled with the level of service on a weekend.
SERVPRO had the honor of cleaning the White House today (1/20/2021) before President Biden moves arrives.
We are proud to be part of such an amazing team of professionals! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be called for such an important job.
It's clear they wanted to be sure the property was sterilized during these unprecedented times of the Coronavirus pandemic. In the past the butlers and employees at the White House would facilitate the cleaning procedures. Since we are in the middle of a pandemic they needed to step up their game to ensure the safety of everyone entering the premises this afternoon.
SERVPRO has the equipment, cleaning supplies, training, and manpower to handle any job! Especially a job as big as cleaning the White House in as little as a few hours.
Please watch the below video for more details about this opportunity!

Having a plan will help decrease the money spent during the loss, and will help get things back to "Like it never even happened," quickly and efficiently.

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.
Pipes that freeze most frequently are:
Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.
How to Protect Pipes From Freezing
Before the onset of cold weather, protect your pipes from freezing by following these recommendations:
Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.
How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
How to Thaw Frozen Pipes
If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.
Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.
SERVPRO of South Louisville Storm Team assisted in the cleanup and restoration in May of 2020 following the record-breaking streak of rainfall in Chicago, IL. Our crews were on scene quickly to assist in the cleanup! We worked closely with local franchises to help as many customers as possible.
Following a week of continuous heavy rainfall, Chicago set a record on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, for the city's wettest May in history. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), 2.79 mm (0.11 inches) of rainfall was recorded overnight at the O'Hare Airport, pushing the city's May precipitation to 210.8 mm (8.3 inches)-- this surpassed the previous record of 209.55 (8.25 inches) set in 2019.
"May 2020 is now the wettest on record in 150 years of official rainfall observations here-- and the month isn't over," said American meteorologist Tom Skilling. "We'll be adding to the month's rainfall total."
On Monday, May 18, heavy rain led to major flooding in the area-- the Chicago River burst, inundating the Riverwalk in some spots.

"These guys were quick to show up after Hurricane Laura devastated our hometown of Lake Charles, Louisiana. They came all the way south to help out from the goodness of their hearts! They are all super professional and so friendly! They were here for us in a desperate time of need. Business Development Representative, Kathy Dreyer, has hit the ground running since her arrival at SERVPRO. She has seen the value of our complimentary ERP (Emergency Ready Plan) and helped bring that plan into action for many businesses.
Kathy worked directly with Floyd County Schools in Southern Indiana to discuss the need for emergency plans and communication tools since each school had its own Plant Manager and in some cases a Plant Operator who assists the Manager.
With multiple contacts at the different schools, and in the system the ERP can provide a tool that can help everyone stay in touch and informed on how to properly shut off water, power and gas for the property in case of emergency.
Kathy conducted 24 Emergency Ready Plans for the New Albany Floyd County School System during fall break in October of 2020. Kathy provided each Plant Manager & Operator their own paper copy and digital access to the app/web.
If a situation arises in the Floyd County school system they will know exactly what to do to minimize damage and who to contact in the event of an emergency.
If you would like to schedule an ERP for your business please reach out to Randy Barnet, Marketing Manager, at randybarnett.SERVPRO@gmail.com
Being a part of the Storm Team at SERVPRO means having the knowledge and willpower to work through a devastating circumstance.
At SERVPRO of South Louisville our team went to Lake Charles following Hurricane Laura. They encountered many customers with a wide variety of issues after the storm ripped through the area. Below is a review from a very happy customer.
"Derek and Rhett were absolutely a God send after Hurricane Laura. Like for real I checked for angel wings a few times! They were so kind and responsive. Speaking of responsive, I cannot believe how quickly SERVPRO came in, evaluated our home, and got the job done. As a fellow business owner I recognize the fact that your "boots on the ground" are the face of your company. I seriously could not imagine two men that I would be more than happy to be the face of my company. You've got a great asset with those two. Keep up the good work SERVPRO!!
Have you ever left your house for a vacation and wondered what would happen if a toilet started leaking while you were away? I'm sure the thought of coming home to a water damage would be the furthest thing from your mind when you are heading out of the door on vacation.
Well, for an unlucky homeowner when they returned home from a vacation they walked into their kitchen and found a huge mess. The toilet supply line in the upstairs bathroom had a leak and while they were away the water made its way through the second floor and down into the kitchen below.
The water saturated the drywall causing it to fall on the countertop. The water was pooling all over the hardwood floor below.
Luckily the team at SERVPRO knew how to handle the situation. They quickly found the source and shut off the water, started cleaning up and extracting as much water as they could. Then they set up drying mats to do their best to save the hardwood floor. To the homeowners delight the hardwood floor was able to be saved which saved the customer time and money.
Contrary to popular belief bleach will not kill mold. In fact, as much as the infamous fragrance of bleach triggers us to think that it is clean and disinfected, bleach does not disinfect porous surfaces. Linoleum, wood, cloth or even drywall will not be disinfected by using bleach. Using bleach actually can encourage mold to grow into a toxic mold because it's providing the mold with moisture needed to multiply and spread. When trying to eradicate the mold color, bleach is a good choice but will not inhibit the growth of mold. We are proud to share that we choose family-friendly, kid-friendly and pet safe products for our customers when remediating mold. Compared to using bleach which is corrosive and has toxic fumes. Our products will not harm your home or your surfaces. Partner those agents with state of the art equipment to aid in the remediation as well as a highly trained staff and you have a win. Choose SERVPRO of South Louisville and know the job is done right.

Poor Air Quality? Allergies? It might be time to clean your ducts!
When you use a traditional HVAC system, the air ducts are a vital part of circulating the air. However, when the duct work becomes dirty, your indoor air quality can suffer as a result. It can also lead to further problems like mold growth, which may impact your health. To avoid this, the Franchise Professionals at SERVPRO of South Louisville recommends having your ducts cleaned regularly.
Why Your Air Ducts Should Be Cleaned
Breathe Easier
As air circulates through the HVAC system and your home, it is easy for dust, dirt, and pet dander to become lodged in the ducts. As the amount of allergens in your ducts increases, those with allergies may experience an influx of symptoms, such as red and puffy eyes, sneezing, and a scratchy throat. Dust and dirt in your ducts may result in poor air quality.
Remove Mold
When moisture from damp areas in the home makes it to the air ducts, they may encourage mold and mildew growth. This may lead to spores spreading throughout the structure and possibly lead to other health effects.
Increase Energy Efficiency
When air ducts become impacted with dust and other debris, it causes the HVAC system to work harder. As a result, your monthly energy bill can start to go up. When you have it cleaned, the air can blow freely out of the vents. Additionally, your unit is less likely to require as many repairs when it is working efficiently.
If you are experiencing an increase in allergy symptoms or smelling a musty odor coming from the air vents, it’s time to have your duct work cleaned. The trusted team at SERVPRO of South Louisville provides numerous residential and commercial restoration services, including air duct and HVAC cleaning, mold remediation, and odor removal and deodorization.
SERVPRO of South Louisville recently received a call from a local fire department asking us to arrive on the scene to board up the home and make the home secure to protect the owners contents from being stolen. While on scene securing the home the owner had spoke with SERVPRO of South Louisville's crews and after conversing with the crews for a while the owner of the home had decided that she wanted SERVPRO of South Louisville to not only handle the board up of the home, but handle the cleaning of the structure and contents, but also the reconstruction that would be necessary to get her home back to normal.
As of now, SERVPRO of South Louisville is currently packing out all of the owners contents to the warehouse where they will be cleaned and stored until her home is back to normal. Once the owners contents are out of the home SERVPRO will start cleaning areas necessary and performing demolition in the areas that are too damaged to be cleaned.
After the crews are done with cleaning SERVPRO's reconstruction team will take over the job and make the home look like the fire "Like it never even happened."

It's important to focus on Carbon Monoxide safety during the winter months. Carbon monoxide gas, by definition, is made of one part carbon and one part oxygen. Carbon monoxide comes from incompletely burned carbon fuel like wood, gasoline, coal, propane, natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil. When burned in an open area with plenty of ventilation, these energy sources aren’t dangerous, but in a confined space like a basement, kitchen, garage, or camper. Over 90% of all carbon monoxide poisoning deaths in the United States are due to gas space heaters which are being used with out proper ventilation. When using these heating elements it is not only important to have proper ventilation but also use safety measures such as Carbon monoxide detectors. If your detector goes off move everyone in the home to a well ventilated area and call 911. Your local fire department can check your home and give you an all clear to reenter.

Water and electronics rarely go well together. When you call in commercial water damage restoration professionals, they can give you advice on the best ways to deal with these flooded electronics, along with these tips:
• Avoid Power: Plugging in any water-damaged computers is not a good idea. You want to keep the power off to ensure the inner workings of the electronics are not fried more than they already are. If you add power, you may give the circuits a chance to short.
• Assess Damage: The truth is that some equipment should be salvageable and other pieces may have to be thrown away. Figuring out which is which requires a professional to assess your electronic damage.
• Dry Out: If a piece is deemed worthy of restoration, you need to make sure it is completely dried out before the fixing actually starts. The methods for drying out electronics may vary, but experts may want to take your equipment apart to allow it to dry thoroughly.
• Replace Parts: In some cases, you may need to replace certain parts of your flooded electronics. This partial replacement may help you save money and keep your saved documents.
• Restore Data: In other cases, your only option may be to restore lost data to a different device. This restoration allows you to continue your business. However, you may need to buy new equipment.
• Start Claim: Losing large portions of your company's electronic equipment can hurt your business. If flooding leads to you needing to replace most of your electronics, it can cost a lot. Thankfully, your commercial insurance may cover the cost of replacing some of the items. After water fills your commercial space, you may be able to save some of the flooded electronics. In most cases, it is best to work with a professional familiar with electronic restoration.
In order to understand fire damage we should understand the process of fire itself. Fire occurring is due to the oxidation of something during the exothermic chemical process. Essentially, that means that when oxygen fuels combustion, heat and light are produced, which is what you see and feel as a result.
While most of us aren’t chemists and haven’t been in a chemistry class in years, we can recall on some knowledge of elements and compounds to understand fire better. The flame itself occurs during the ignition point, which is a part of the combustion reaction. The flame, however, is only the visible part of the fire itself. The flames are a combination of not only oxygen, but also nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. A variety of temperatures and colors of the flames are produced dependent on the circumstances. Different materials can burn hotter, and some can create flames that may be blue in color.
Fire is a hazard to life, once the reaction creates spreadable flames. Of course, we understand that it burns and spreads, however there are other dangerous aspects of fire itself. For one, it can create pollution because certain things, when burned, can put chemicals into the air. Plastic, for example, isn’t something that can be burned safely. Forest fires can threaten the nutrition in the soil, which can prevent a forest from growing back easily. Fires cause permanent damage. Though fires are helpful, used to benefit the growth of society since the beginning of time, there are a lot of boundaries between it being helpful and destructive. For light and warmth we use it in many ways, but the moment we lose control of it, it threatens the well-being of our homes and belongings and lives.
Fire damage is important to take seriously, since the lingering effects of fire can harm our bodies, homes, and material possessions. In case of fire damage, immediately contact a restoration company such as SERVPRO of South Louisville to limit damaging after effects of the chemical process that we just learned about.

If you’ve recently found a patch of black mold in your home, you’re likely beside yourself with worry. Mold Cleanup does not have to be stressful. In fact, the easiest and most reliable method of mold remediation relies on the knowledge and equipment of professionals.
These experts can help get your home back to normal by taking the following steps.
Steps professionals follow to stop mold growth
Find the moisture source. Because mold needs moisture to grow, it’s important to find the source of moisture. A roof leak or condensation buildup may be the culprit of your mold problem. However, if this source isn’t found, the fungus will continue to come back. Finding and fixing the issue helps contain your mold growth.
Wear personal protective equipment. While mold can cause structural damage to your home, it can also be a hazard. For this reason, professionals often put on masks, gloves and goggles before working with the mold in your home.
Remove the porous materials. Porous materials must be discarded when affected by moisture and mold damage. For this reason, any affected dry wall will have to be cut out of the home and discarded. Carpets, mattresses and other objects may also have to be discarded.
Clean and disinfect non-porous objects. Professionals may use a detergent-based disinfectant to clean the hard surfaces affected by mold. This cleaning should remove all spores.
Dry out the area. After the cleaning, the entire area of your home affected by mold should be properly dried out. The remediation team may bring in air movers and dehumidifiers to help remove moisture from your home. The growth of mold can be stopped by the proper cleaning steps. The only true way to stop this growth is to remove the source of the moisture and git rid of as many of the spores as possible.
It may be tempting to do the remediation yourself, but remediation experts at SERVPRO of South Louisville have the knowledge and equipment necessary to do this task well.
After calling 911 it's important to do your research before hiring a restoration company to help you get your home back to normal. SERVPRO has certified technicians and we are used to working directly with insurance agents and adjusters to make the process easier for you and your family.
Have you ever thought about what you would do if a fire happened at your home?
These steps are things to think about so you understand the process in getting your home or business back to a clean and safe state.
Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork.
Place dry colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely to prop doors open to help prevent odor.
Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim, and appliances, then protect thee surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks, and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
Change the HVAC filter, but leave the system off until a trained professional can check the system.
Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

Be prepared this Winter. Check your pipes BEFORE they freeze
SERVPRO of South Louisville would like to keep you aware of the possibilities of freezing conditions in the Louisville area and the possibility of frozen pipes. Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as outside your home, in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the back flow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.
To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take:
Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pools and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air circulate near the plumbing.
When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip form the faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.
Wrap outside faucets.
Caulk around pipes where they enter the house.
Shut off and drain your water system if you are leaving home for several days.
According to the National Fire Protection Association there is an estimated 1,000 fires everyday in the United States. Most home fires and fire casualties result from five causes: cooking, heating, electrical distribution and lighting equipment, intentional fire setting, and smoking materials. SERVPRO of South Louisville recently was called to a house in Crestwood, Kentucky that had experienced a fire that was caused by a defect in the lining of the chimney. The fire had actually smoldered inside the chimney and under the hearth for days until it finally ignited. Most of the damage to the house was from smoke and soot.
SERVPRO of South Louisville was called out to mitigate the damage, providing smoke damage cleanup and water restoration. Beyond the visible structural damage, many of the contents inside the structure were evaluated for recovery based on a number of factors including: Replacement Cost, Loss of Use, Loss of Value, Decreased Life Expectancy, and Sentimental Value.
When the unexpected happens at your home or business trust the experts, call SERVPRO of South Louisville today.

As winter approaches earlier than we would like this year it is important to be prepared in the event of an ice storm or polar vortex. Louisville, Kentucky is used to these sorts of events because they seem to be happening each and every winter. Frozen pipes can cause severe damage to your home or business. These frozen pipes can be prevented if you follow a few steps during those cold temperatures.
Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.
Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing, especially if your sinks are on an exterior wall. (If you have small children, be sure to remove any harmful cleaners and household chemicals.)
Let the cold water drip from a faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe—even at a trickle—helps prevent pipes from freezing.
Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during day and night. Again, during a cold snap is not the time to set back the thermostat at night to save a few bucks on your heating bill.
If you plan to be away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
For the long term, add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas. And to prevent drafts, seal cracks and openings around windows, doors, and at sill plates, where the house rests on its foundation.

This week SERVPRO of South Louisville had one of our customers hit the click to call button after a fire. The fire happened on the very top floor (17th floor) of a downtown high-rise apartment building. The fire caused damage to the main residence where it started. A burnt mattress, smoke and soot damage, but nothing major from the fire.
The biggest problem came from the sprinkler system and the thousands of gallons the local fire department used to eliminate any hot spots. When the smoke had settled the water had founds its way from the 17th floor all the way to the ground level of the building. To compound the problem even more when SERVPRO of South Louisville arrived both elevators were down.
Our crews worked tirelessly to get all of our equipment (130 air movers and 35 dehus) up the stairs and placed on each floor in order to start the dry out process. After a week of running the equipment moisture tests were performed and we had accomplished drying the whole building out. SERVPRO of South Louisville also finished the job by doing all the reconstruction to the affected unit. Call SERVPRO of South Louisville when disaster strikes for quick response.

Why it's important to call SERVPRO at the first sign of water damage
The amount of damage water can cause is amazing and often underestimated by homeowners. Excess moisture is bad enough, but when a home is flooded or hit with a plumbing disaster (like a busted pipe), the situation can quickly get out of hand. There’s a reason why these incidents are among the most expensive problems a homeowner can face.
Floods, sewage back flows, and other sources of contaminated fluid usually cause the worst damage. Water can be filled with all kinds of deadly substances, ranging from chemical residues to animal feces to parasites. Bacteria, viruses and fungi grow in an alarming rate in contaminated fluid, and severe health risks can be caused by these contaminants.
This problem is compounded by the composition of most homes, which are filled with organic materials. Drywall, wood and the matter that is trapped in carpet fibers are just a few examples, and they can give pathogens room to grow. Within 48 hours, mold may begin creeping behind the walls and releasing spores, and any organic materials that have been soaked through by contaminated fluid will usually have to be destroyed.
SERVPRO of South Louisville will dry the home quickly and apply antibacterial, antiviral, and anti fungal agents to all surfaces that had contact with the water. This ensures the family can return to a safe home.

South Louisville recently had some ugly weather where it went from above freezing to single digit temperatures very quickly. Weather that goes from above freezing then dropping that low for several days can cause pipes to freeze and burst in homes and businesses.
In Louisville this is a very common occurrence due to the constant fluctuating of weather temperatures. There are several ways to try to help prevent this from occurring. One way to help prevent this from happening is to make sure the heat in your business or home is at or above sixty eight degrees, having the temperature regulated inside the home will help make sure the pipes do not get cold enough to freeze.
Another tip to help prevent this from happening is having faucets in your home dripping water throughout the home. This maintains movement of water through the pipes so there is less of a chance for it to freeze inside the pipes.
Use these helpful tips and you should not have to deal with a burst pipe in your home or business, but if in this bad weather you still have a burst pipe in your home or business SERVPRO of South Louisville has the experience and the staff to take care of your problem “Like it never even happened.”
SERVPRO of South Louisville was called out to a large warehouse to perform mold remediation on their property. We immediately went onto the property and started the mold remediation process. Our certified technicians take mold jobs very seriously and work very hard to make sure your home or business is safe and clean.
The first step in the remediation process is air filtration, we used equipment to pull all of the microscopic mold spore out of the air. Step two is to removed drywall or subfloors that have extensive damage done to them where they cannot be salvaged. Step three is to wipe down any surface that has been affected by mold with an anti-fungal and antimicrobial treatment that kills mold and keeps mold colonies from forming. Finally after all belongings, contents, and surfaces have been removed and treated for mold the process of restoring all the removed drywall and sub-flooring, making the property look "Like it never even happened."
Mold can be caused by issues you might not know exist in your home or business. HVAC units can cause mold to grow. Sometimes people think that visible water is the only way you can get mold. That's not true. Mold can hide in clothing, behind wall paper, behind drywall or moldings, in crawlspaces, and many more places you might not think of.
Mold can easily grow on clothes and fabric if you have too much moisture in your home. Clothes made of cotton or other organic materials make great food sources for mold and mildew to live on.
It's best to consult a professional when dealing with mold. However, if you feel comfortable trying these steps to remove mold from clothing see below.
Tips to keep in mind when removing mold from clothes:
It's best to wash your clothes in hot water. Hot water kills mold more effectively than cold water and better removes mold spores and allergens too. Of course make sure you don't use water so hot that it can damage your clothing.
When you're washing your clothes with a mold killing solution, it's best to wash them through at least two full cycles. Then after your clothes have been washed hang them on the line in the sun. The heat from the sun and the sun's ultraviolet light help to kill mold.
There are quite a few solutions you can wash moldy clothes in to get rid of the mold. Some good ones include:
Bleach
Borax
Vinegar
Baking soda
Mold killing detergent

Frozen Pipes can cause major damage in South Louisville
Winter can bring many issues to the area regarding water and fire restoration. Many commercial buildings have been impacted by frozen pipes in the past and it's not too late for those frigid temperatures to hit Louisville this year.
A large university in our area had a number of dorms and class rooms affected by water damage due to frozen pipes last year. This happens for a number of reasons, but the majority that we see are either unoccupied buildings or seldom used buildings like churches and dorms. These vacant buildings become targets for frozen pipes because usually the heat is turned off or extremely low. Although some of these disasters are unavoidable, many can be prevented by turning the heat up, or leaving the water in the pipes running by slightly opening faucets.
When the unavoidable happens, call the people at SERVPRO of South Louisville and we can help make a very stressful and chaotic situation become more tolerable.
SERVPRO of South Louisville recently got called to a home where the sump pump had failed and the customer had four inches of standing water in his basement. When SERVPRO of arrived on site there was no longer four inches of standing water but there was still a good amount of water throughout the basement. SERVPRO performed the necessary actions to remove the water and moisture from the basement using extraction methods, fans and dehumidifiers. When the dry out was finished our repair division replaced all the damaged drywall.
In some cases your home owners insurance may not cover sump pump overflows. This is a good reminder to take a look at your home insurance policy to make sure you have coverage for sump pump failure. Sump pump fails are very common and you might want to make sure it is included in your home insurance policy. This slight increase in your monthly insurance cost could save you thousands of dollars in the future.

Fires can be very traumatic and leave people displaced from there homes for months on end. Fires are traumatic enough when they are accidental. In this case the fire was started purposefully, the arsonist put a mattress in the hallway of the apartment building and poured gasoline on it and lit it on fire causing the whole building to be engulfed in flames.
Luckily no one was harmed in the fire but all of the tenants were left with smoke filled belongings and no where to go. One of the tenants is a veteran and was homeless two years ago. He feared he was going to be back on the streets again because of this fire. SERVPRO of South Louisville helped this man pack up most of his belongings, and helped him find temporary housing until his caseworker could find him something more permanent.
Our goal is to make it "Like it never even happened."
South Louisville suffered an ice storm and many homes and business had power outages across the city. With power outages comes sump pump failures which can cause flooding throughout the home. SERVPRO of South Louisville was dispatched to several dozen homes in the area with inches to feet of standing water in their basement due to power outages. Our certified crews went out to the homes and extracted the standing water, pulled out any saturated flooring and baseboards, then set up dehumidifiers and air movers in the areas needed to get rid of the moisture. One way to prevent this sump pump failure issue due to power loss is to invest in a generator at your home. Don't hesitate to give us a call if you suffer any water damage in your home or business. We pride ourselves in excellent customer service and hope to make your disaster "Like it never even happened."
2018 brought two of the worst hurricanes to hit the United States in many years. While both were devastating, they were destructive in different ways. Hurricane Florence dropped almost 36 inches of rain in the Carolina’s causing extensive flooding statewide. Hurricane Michael brought winds upwards of 155 mph, devastating the Florida panhandle with damages that flattened some areas. SERVPRO of South Louisville was called to help people affected in both states just weeks apart. The SERVPRO Storm Teams were activated to assist in the clean-up of these areas. With the water damaged caused by Florence, getting the water extracted and the drying process started was priority one for the team. This allowed the customers to return home safely, mitigating the risk to their health. As for Michael, this storm brought a number of different issues for the SERVPRO Storm Team to face. The wind was the main issue so getting roofs tarped was the first priorty, and debris had to be cleared before mitigation could begin. While both storms proved to be a challenge, the professionals of SERVPRO of South Louisville showed compassion and professionalism that will be felt for years to come.
When a fire strikes no one is ready for the emotion and fear they can instill. In most cases families can be displaced for months on end, contents are destroyed, and memories are lost. Recently, SERVPRO of South Louisville was called to a home that had heavy smoke and soot damaged caused by a small appliance that had shorted out. A television in the back bedroom of the home had caught fire causing extensive damage to the bedroom and bathroom. Luckily no one was hurt in the fire, but now the process of cleaning up all the soot and tearing out damaged materials throughout the home has begun. SERVPRO of South Louisville understands the process of cleaning a home or business after a fire. We also have the capabilities to do the reconstruction once the mitigation is complete. We work hand-in-hand with the home owner making sure that we can transform the residence back into a home they can make new memories in for years to come.

Blue tarps on roofs dot the landscape of buildings and homes that are left standing. The sound of chainsaws cutting threw down trees, and mountains of debris dragged out to curbs on every street in town. These are the sights and sounds of the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. This monster storm ravaged the city of Panama City, Florida with winds up to 155 mph. Thick tree trunks snapped 12 feet off the ground, boats and marinas destroyed, and beaches that once bustled with tourists are now littered with debris and memories of broken lives.

Microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, outdoors and indoors, making it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or on a pet.
Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
Standing water not addressed can lead to serious issues.
Why is the quick response to a water damage so important? Not only does standing water in your home create an inconvenience in your life. Not addressing it in quick and efficient manner can lead a much more serious issue. As water soaks into flooring and drywall. Mold is given the perfect atmosphere to thrive. In only a few days mold can take a standard water job and turn it into a much more complicated issue. It can cause respiratory issues, and extend the time it take to repair. Most drywall will have to be removed and replaced as opposed to simply dried. This can turn an inconvenience into an all out nightmare. Let your local SERVPRO take care of you needs in a quick efficient manner and help put you mind at ease.
This Crawlspace was covered in Mold until SERVPRO was able to address the situation.
In Kentucky many homes have crawlspaces and basements. These homes are scattered throughout our neighborhoods and subdivisions, which provide a great place to store Seasonal belongings. Unfortunately these spaces also create the perfect conditions for mold growth. Due to the cooler temperatures in these spaces, warm air that comes in from the outside often cools quickly, causing condensation to cover many of the organic materials in these places. The combination of moisture and rising temps, allows mold spores to spread and multiply rapidly. How does this affect the home owner? Airflow in a home moves from bottom to top meaning much of the air you breath comes from what is directly under you. Which means if you have mold in your crawlspace or basement, it is likely affecting the air quality in the living space in your home. If you have this issue at your home at SERVPRO we can help!!!

Mold is a hot topic in our industry today, it can affect old and new homes a like and has the ability to spread rapidly. However, mold effects go well beyond the visual damage that it creates. Mold has is often the culprit behind health issues with in the home. Even thought it has a much greater impact on the young and elderly, it also can have health effects to healthy adults. Mold spreads throughout a home as tiny mold spores get into the air and look for new organic materials within the home. Once airborne these spores can be breathed in and begin to affect your respiratory system causing severe allergies, or even asthma. Shown in the picture is one view of part of Salem, Indiana to give you an idea of just how much water flooded the town.
A state of emergency was declared in an Indiana county Friday after flooding prompted water rescues and inundated buildings and homes in parts of the Hoosier State.
Torrential rainfall of 4-5 inches soaked the Salem, Indiana, area in a short amount of time late Friday, according to weather.com. The rain sent the Blue River into a record flood at 20.15 feet, which crushed the previous record level of 17.1 feet set in May 2004.
SERVPRO has been taking calls all weekend to try and assist with this devastating flood. Of course we weren't able to get to the job sites until the water in the city subsided.
They had rescuers getting people who were trapped in their vehicles out, and to safety. Now that the water has subsided a couple days later SERVPRO is able to make it to the job sites and start marketing to other home and businesses in need. SERVPRO is always on top of any flooding or catastrophic event that Mother nature deals us. While it is quite unfortunate, it is something we have no control over and SERVPRO is blessed to be able to help those in need is such desperate times.

Living by that quote and treating the customers property like its our own is very important to making them feel comfortable with our expertise in the field, rather we move out all of the homes contents, or clean everything on site. Working with sub-contractors for their clothes and textiles to get them cleaned and ready to bring back once the job is completed is something else we explain to the customer, but we also try to deal with the sub-contractor one on one to take even more stress off of the customer. Fires are very tedious and take longer than most jobs to complete since there is so much involved, but here at SERVPRO we do it professionally, and in a timely fashion.
